Is Troy Jackson a Democrat, Republican or Socialist?
A Democrat who kept winning in far northern Maine as it turned Republican.
Troy Jackson is a Democrat. Delegates at the Maine Democratic Party's convention in Bangor chose him as the party's nominee for U.S. Senate on July 25, 2026. Before that he ran in the Democratic primary for governor, and on May 11, 2026 he wrote: "I’m running as a Democrat."
He kept winning as Aroostook turned Republican
For two decades Troy represented far northern Maine in the Maine House and Senate. He won term after term as a Democrat while the region turned more and more Republican. Aroostook County voted for Donald Trump for president and kept sending Troy back to the Legislature.
On Maine Calling on October 1, 2026, he said the County keeps electing him "because I fight for economic issues for people."
He wants Democrats to be the party of labor
On July 10, 2026, in a post with the Maine AFL-CIO, he wrote: "The Democratic Party can become the party of labor again."
At a Lewiston town hall on September 1, 2026, he was asked how he would win over swing and Republican voters. His answer started with his own party: "I think Democrats have a lot of work to bring working class people back into the fold."
Party loyalty comes second
On the Find Out Podcast, in an interview the campaign shared on August 21, 2026, he said: "I may be a Democrat, but I fought with Democrats as much as Republicans on these issues, and I won't turn my back on the people I care about based on party loyalty."
At a Bangor rally in October 2026, he put it shorter: "We're not from the left, we're not from the right. We're from the bottom, and we're rising."
