Troy Jackson’s Authentic, Hard-Working Roots Resonate with Voters, Make Him the Right Pick for Maine

PORTLAND, ME — Fifth-generation logger, former President of the Maine Senate, and Candidate for U.S. Senate Troy Jackson has garnered national attention for his journey from union organizing as a logger in ‘The County’ to becoming Maine’s Democratic Nominee for U.S. Senate. All across Maine, voters are recognizing Troy’s authenticity and lived experience that make him the most qualified candidate and while Susan Collins fights for the interests of the ultra wealthy, Troy fights for Maine.

AP: How Troy Jackson went from Maine logger to the Democratic nominee for Senate against Susan Collins

  • Jackson’s campaign has focused on his ties to Aroostook County, a sprawling, wooded region known as “The County” to Mainers. It’s where Jackson, 58, says he watched hard-working people struggle to get ahead, fueling his fight against billionaires and corporations. It also is the place that has elected Jackson to the Legislature while supporting Republican Donald Trump for president.

  • “Everyone in [logging] works hard for our families. We did follow the rules. But the harder we worked, the more that companies took from us,” Jackson said during his nomination acceptance speech at a party convention in Bangor. “And further behind we would fall.”

  • Jackson has repeatedly argued that he will be a strong Senate candidate because he has kept his legislative seat as a Democrat while the region steadily became more Republican, including when Aroostook County swung for Trump.

Washington Post: Democratic voters who used to back Susan Collins aren’t so sure anymore

  • Jackson has said he hopes to win over voters by contrasting his record with hers. He’s also slammed her for supporting billions of supplementary funding for ICE. A super PAC aligned with Senate Democrats is attacking her on the issue on the air, saying she wrote the bill that funded ICE.

  • Overall, 49 percent of likely voters said they planned to vote for Jackson, with 46 percent backing Collins, and 3 percent saying they are undecided.

Portland Press Herald: Opinion: A vote for Troy Jackson will help restore American democracy

  • He directly challenges the basic flaw of America today: the massive flow of wealth from ordinary citizens to the already disgustingly rich who control the media, the stock market, the corporations and every other economic and societal power center.

  • I knew Troy as a fellow Democratic state legislator while I served in the Maine Legislature…He was repeatedly elected to the Senate presidency, based on his political skills, honesty and reliability. His colleagues respected him, as did his normally Republican-leaning hard-working, no-nonsense constituents.

  • Troy is no phony…His roots are authentically working class from The County; his family has long toiled as back-breaking fellers of giant trees in the northern forests. This is as physically hard as it gets, and his understanding of the exploitation of the working class flows from his and his forefathers’ experience. He began his political career with his well-earned fierce opposition to the forces that sought to decimate his fellow American loggers by the profit-driven importation of Canadian loggers and exportation of our timber.
