Troy Jackson for U.S. Senate in Maine

PRESS RELEASE

Mi’kmaq Nation Tribal Council And Chief Sheila McCormack Endorse Troy Jackson for U.S. Senate

PRESQUE ISLE, ME — Today, Chief Sheila McCormack along with the Tribal Council of Mi’kmaq Nation endorsed fifth-generation logger, former Maine Senate President, and Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate Troy Jackson for U.S. Senate. The endorsement from the federally recognized tribe based in northern Maine highlights Jackson’s long record of fighting for tribal sovereignty and expanding access to resources for Maine’s Tribal Nations.

“I’m proud to have the endorsement of Chief McCormack and the Mi’Kmaq Nation Tribal Council,” said Jackson. “Maine has failed the Mi’Kmaq Nation by refusing to recognize their inherent sovereignty and limiting their access to state resources, and more and more Mainers, across party lines, recognize the harm these restrictions have caused. Learning from our tribal neighbors and standing alongside them in this fight has been one of the greatest honors of my life. I’ll carry that commitment with me to Washington.”

“Troy Jackson has stood with the Mi’kmaq people,” said Mi’Kmaq Chief Sheila McCormack. “With his fervent support of the Mi’kmaq people, his consistent advocacy and his track record in the Legislature, there is no question that he will be a true partner to restore tribal sovereignty and improve outcomes for both the Mi’kmaq Nation and Maine people in the U.S. Senate.”

Troy has a long record as a Tribal champion in the Maine legislature, where he fought to recognize tribal sovereignty, establish a commission to reexamine the 1980 Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act, and ensure the Wabanaki nations had equal access to government resources. Jackson championed legislation to improve water quality and family protections, recognize the exclusive jurisdiction of tribal courts, and foster economic development.
