Troy Jackson Fights for Rural Health Care, Veterans and Working Families Across Maine

PORTLAND, Maine — Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate Troy Jackson traveled across southern and Midcoast Maine this weekend, joining Mainers fighting to preserve rural health care, demand accountability from federal immigration authorities, support Maine veterans, and build a government that works for working people—not billionaires and powerful corporations.

On Saturday morning, Jackson joined nurses, patients and community members in Portland calling on MaineHealth to keep the labor and delivery unit at Miles Memorial Hospital open.

WATCH:

“We’re told we can’t afford to keep labor and delivery care in rural Maine, but Susan Collins always seems to find the money to give billionaires another tax break,” Jackson said. “MaineHealth must vote to keep Miles Labor & Delivery open. Lincoln County deserves better. We all do.”

Jackson then traveled to Biddeford, where he joined Maine veterans and community members at an event organized by the Maine Veterans Alliance, Common Defense and Maine Veterans for Peace. Jackson called for accountability following recent ICE activity in Maine and condemned the massive expansion of an agency operating with too little transparency or oversight.

“Veterans served this country because they believed in something bigger than themselves—not so the government could violate the rights and dignity they fought to defend,” Jackson said. “What weakens public safety is a government that demands trust while refusing accountability.”

Jackson also contrasted his record of fighting to protect Maine’s rural veterans’ homes with Collins’ support for legislation providing tens of billions of dollars to dramatically expand ICE operations.

On Sunday, Jackson joined hundreds of Democrats, community leaders and working families at the Lincoln County Democratic Committee’s annual lobster bake in Waldoboro. Jackson discussed his upbringing in a fifth-generation logging family, his record of standing up to corporate interests and the working-class movement he is building to defeat Susan Collins.

“For too long, working people have been told to settle for less while the people at the top take more,” Jackson said. “Mainers are getting crushed by the cost of health care, housing, groceries and heat. The people I met this weekend aren’t asking for special treatment. They are asking for a government—and a senator—willing to fight as hard for them as Susan Collins fights for billionaires and corporate special interests.”

Jackson continued:

“That’s what this campaign is about. It’s about bringing together people from every part of Maine who work hard, play by the rules and are tired of being ignored. The people of Maine are ready for a senator who will stand beside them and fight back.
