Is Troy Jackson pro-choice? Did he change his view on abortion?

On September 4, 2026, he shared a new op-ed with a plain title: "What Listening to Women Taught Me About Reproductive Freedom."

"I listened to women in my life and women I represented," he wrote. "I listened to health care providers. I listened to colleagues in the legislature. And the more I listened, the clearer something became to me: abortion is health care."

At a reproductive rights event before the first debate on October 6, 2026, he said it more simply: "It just became clear to me that I was wrong and that reproductive rights is healthcare and I always have thought that people should have healthcare."

He talked about the change again at the second debate, on October 8, 2026. "Our records have changed," he said. "Mine has gotten better."

Troy served six years as President of the Maine Senate, from 2018 to 2024. At the Women for Troy launch in Brunswick in August 2026, he said: "When Roe was overturned, I didn't wring my hands or make excuses" and "I got to work."

After Roe fell, he cosponsored LD 1619, which removed criminal penalties specific to abortion care and put decisions about abortion later in pregnancy in the hands of women and licensed physicians. As Senate president he also helped enact LD 820, so MaineCare and private plans that cover prenatal care also cover abortion services. He opposed LD 1229, a bill for a 48-hour abortion waiting period.

"I feel proud that I was part of a team of people that made sure that women in Maine didn't lose their reproductive rights," he told a town hall in Bath in October 2026.

Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed him at that Brunswick launch. Planned Parenthood Action Fund endorsed him on September 3, 2026.

On August 27, 2026, he said he is running for Senate "to restore and expand the federal right to abortion."
